Top 10 Grammatical and Spelling Errors of 2013 It’s that time of year again! This year I will address some of the top grammatical and spelling errors specifically found on resumes and business documents, both of which constitute a large portion of what I read. Here’s the list: #10 Inconsistencies in Bulleted Lists If you make a list of bulleted items, whether it be on a resume or on a website, make them consistent in terms of the part of speech you start with. Bullets that start with the words Provide, Assess, Ensure, and Designing are not parallel; nor are bullets that start with Creates, Teaches, Organized, and Fulfills. Perhaps the inconsistent word jumps off the page when listed this way, but I see mismatched bullets in many types of documents every day. Check your bulleted lists carefully! #9 Manager/Manger According to Wikipedia, a “manger” is “a feeder that is made of carved stone, wood, or metal construction and is used to hold food for animals (as in a stable).” A “manager,” in contrast, is a person in a professional setting who supervises a person or team. Don’t mix them up on your resume, or in your Christmas greetings ;-). #8 Principal/Principle “Principal” is an adjective meaning first, highest, or foremost in importance, rank, worth, or degree; or of, relating to, or being financial principal, or a principal in a financial transaction. It can also be a noun meaning a person with a leading role, or one who holds a position of presiding rank or who is a main participant in a situation. “Principle,” in contrast, is a basic truth, tenet or assumption. I realize this spelling distinction can be hard to remember. One trick I use to keep them straight is to think, “You’re my #1 pal” and know that the word ending in “pal” relates to someone or something that is #1. #7 PowerPoint/Powerpoint It’s a common error to miss the capital P in the middle of PowerPoint. Be careful when listing any computer programs on your resume to spell them correctly! #6 Set up/Setup “Set up” is a verb meaning to set something up or put something in a specified state. Notice that there is a word in between “set” and “up” in the definition of “set up,” which you can think of as being substituted with a space. You must set *something* (_) up. “Setup,” however, is a noun meaning the process of preparing something to be used. You might set up the menus in a restaurant if you work there, but you would go to a setup menu to get a computer program ready for use. #5 Inconsistent Dashes If you use dashes in between start and end dates on your resume, or between any items in a document, use the same length dash for every similar set of text! I almost always see inconsistencies, especially on resumes, and they appear unprofessional. Don’t write June 2011-July 2013 in one spot and August 2010â€"June 2011 in another. #4 Apostrophes This issue makes the list for the third year in a row. Main point: Creating a plural doesn’t require an apostrophe. One client, two clients. To make a singular word possessive, add an apostrophe ‘s’: e.g., I wrote one client’s resume today. To make a plural word possessive, add an apostrophe after the ‘s’: e.g., I reviewed 5 clients’ records and discovered errors in 3 of them. Everyday is an adjective meaning “common” or “day-to-day.” Every day means “daily” or “each and every day.” Want to learn a trick to remember which is which? See Common Grammatical Errors: Everyday vs. Every Day. #2 Lead/Led The absolute most common spelling error on resumes is the use of “lead,” meant to be the past tense of “lead.” The past tense of the verb “to lead” is “led”! I would love to see this error disappear from the resume writing world. #1 Two spaces after a period! Sure there are people who still argue that two spaces after a period is acceptable, but I have been fully converted! I have trained my fingers and my eyes to put one space after each period, and I’m attempting to train my clients to “get with the program” as well. If it’s good enough for the Chicago Manual of Style, it’s good enough for me! Have a happy, healthy, and grammatically correct new year. Biologically, Morrie was dying due to having asthma combined with ALS, a neurological disease that debilitates the body. In turn, Morrie’s behavior changed as well. Morrie became more responsive to other people’s issues and problems(even more so than he already did before). Mitch changed a lot in behavior as well; he had changed a lot from his college days and then changed plenty since his reconnection with his teacher. I am going to comment on those texts at the same time I place them into the historical and social context of the time. Firstly, it is important to consider how it all began. The mid-1950’s was a difficult period for Britain as well as for most of European countries. Britain was still trying to recover itself from the problems the war brought about. This was a grey time , with British youth consoling themselves with their dreams and with imitations of the images which they saw on the cinema of life for kids in America(good cars, good clothes and a lot of money). At the same time they could hear the latest Rock ‘N Roll coming front he States. In a word, British youth culture was totally dominated at that time by American trends and styles. The British music industry in the 50’s was almost exclusively an American imported product. It was controlled from London by middle-aged men totally out of touch with the needs and wants of the youth audience. Out of this atmosphere a uniquely ‘British’ musical trend did emerge late in the 50’s. This was called ‘Skiffle’: â€Å"kind of folk music played by a small group, mainly with rhythmic accompaniment to singing guitarist†. The accompaniment was, more often than not, a washboard, and the material performed was normally of traditional US origin. Apart from that, from London and the South there came acts such as Adam Faith, Marty Wilde, Johnny Layton and Tommy Steel. In the provincial cities the seeds were being sewn for a world-wide musical and cultural revolution. In ports such as Liverpool, there had developed a music culture fiercely independent from London. By the early 60’s in these cities a large and highly competitive band scene emerged, in which hundred of local bands performed the latest imported songs to get the attention of the young audiences, hungry for anything authentic and new. In 1962 there were many great groups in this scene but the audiences decides that The Beatles were number one. The first song Help! was written in 1965 by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The lead vocal was the first. This song was number one in Britain for 9 weeks from 14th August 1965. The other one Imagine was written by the same authors in 1971 and the lead vocal was again John Lennon. This one was number one for 2 weeks from 30th October 1971. Both texts have similarities but also differences, mainly because they are written with some years of difference and that means a process of maturation on the authors. I’m going to comment on the first text in an isolated way and then I will start with the second one, and at the same time, I will establish the comparison between both. Help!, as I have mention before, was written in1965. By that year there were in Britain several problems, such as the crisis arising in 1964.This crisis which lasts till the 70’s was the cause of political and economical problems: the decline of productivity, the increasing pressure of Trade Unions, the balance of paymentsThere was also the question of the war, though in those years Britain was not involved in any war (except for the undeclared Cold War) it was important the question of re-armament. That problem was followed by the reaction of people who was against nuclear weapons and manifested it trough several demonstrations: the Ban-the-Bomb marches. For all these reasons they could be saying â€Å"Help!†. The song goes on â€Å"I need somebody† but â€Å"not just anybody† that is, it could be applying to the fact that very few years ago, and in some way still in those years, Britain was somehow dependent on America. That situation came from the â€Å"Marshall Aid Program†, financed by America to help the UK and other European nations to recover after the war. In that way, Britain was at the mercy of America in some questions and this was felt as a threat. So, with â€Å"not just anybody† he could be referring to the Americans, he needs help but from his context , from the people who is in the same situation as himself. It could also be interpreted as a protest against the situation of unemployment, because of the continuous decline of industry and the dramatic raise of people working in services. If it is so, in the second stanza he means that now everything has changed since in the former years there were not those types of problems. In the 50’s there were almost full employment due to the necessity of reconstructing the country after the war. Thus, in that period the authors doesn’t need that kind of help because unemployment was not a problem. All those interpretation could be acceptable when analysing the two first paragraphs isolated, but when I arrived to the last sentence of the second paragraph and go on reading, I came to the conclusion that what the author is really referring to is the new situation of young people in Britain in those years. I mean, the youth of Britain had started to get an increased spending power and independence in the early 60’s. They had started to get better jobs and they could afford even a motorcycle. For that reason the authors could be saying â€Å"I’ve changed my mind and opened up the doors†. I interpreted this sentence in the way that because of the different role of the youth in society they had also to change their own point of view and to open their minds to the new possibilities that are presenting for them at that moment. Because of the same reason they are saying â€Å"get my feet back on the ground†: the situation is much better for them but things co uld change again, so is important to have in mind this and to maintain the feet on the ground. With this change in the standard of living of young people and thanks to music bands such as The Beatles, Britain became the centre of the music, fashion and pop worlds, and for a few years everyone wanted to film in Britain too. It was full of creativity and optimism which was totally contrary to the mood of the country a few years previously. The song could be referring to that fact too. The song continues with this topic since it says: â€Å"my life has changed in so many ways† and then started to explain some negative sides of that situation(the next three lines)Now he’s independent but independence is not always good. With this, it could also be referring to the fact that Britain has no more power over the colonies, it is no more an Empire, so it is â€Å"independent† in a way (though now it is more dependent on America). The lost of the colonies meant a great shock for most of the British population who had to become accustomed to the idea of not being an Empire any more. Because of that reason they could be saying â€Å"I feel so insecure† or â€Å"When I was youngerBut now these days are gone , I’m not so self assured†. Then â€Å"Now I fond I have changed my mind and opened up the doors† : people are forgetting that and trying to continue with their lives though in a very different way. Imagine has many differences with the previous text. It is completely immerse in the hippie culture that was arising in England as an influence of the US. This song became almost an hymn for those activist, above all, against war. These groups started to appear around 1965. In that way it is a point in common with Help! because it deals with the youth of those times though in a different way: it talks about subcultures. Those subcultures were mainly against the traditional culture and they stood out because of their clothes. The first stanza of this song has to do with religion. It explains how a world without those beliefs and distinctions would be better. At that time religion seems to be insignificant as a part of British identity. People started to believe less in God, and the song says that it is good. The second paragraph deals with wars. It remembers the period of the two world wars where a great amount of countries were confronted and where too much people died. It emphasises again the no necessity of religion which could also be a cause to fight. At that time there was the problem of the Cold War, and it is difficult to remember a time without any war in the world, it is almost a dream: â€Å"Imagine all the people living life in peace†. That was one of the main aims of the hippies, to fight against war. The third paragraph puts its emphasis in the question of money and the social classes. In the 60’s/ 70’s social classes did not seem to be so clearly distinguished thanks to the Welfare State, although there were obvious social differences according to the criteria of money. The song â€Å"imagines† a world without social distinctions, it is an idealistic point of view very close to the idea of Utopia. The world would be â€Å" A brotherhood of man† without discriminations caused by differences of social status, race or gender. People could â€Å"share the world† without fighting for it. To conclude the song, it goes to the central idea: the subculture of the hippies. It is saying that those ideas are not coming from the mind of a single person but many people share that way of thinking. The practice of solid waste management is underpinned by a hierarchy of waste control measures (Peng et al., 1997). History of Gaelic Football Essay

Gaelic Football has been a vital part of the Irish culture for many generations. It is a sport that brings together people in such a way that soccer does in Brazil, baseball in the U.S. and hockey in Canada. The history of Gaelic Football is very rich and passionate and even today is still an excellent display of national pride. The origins of the modern sport of Gaelic Football derive from the Irish sport of Hurling. Hurling has been a sport that has been played for over 4000 years ever since the first feast of Lunagsha in the Tailteann games (Orjan, 2006). The first known date for a Gaelic Football game was in 1670 in County Meath Ireland and the teams were 6-a-side (Orjan, 2006). They used many of the same rules of Hurling but used a larger, softer ball and no hurls. Every four steps, instead of bouncing the ball off their hurley, they would either bounce the ball or drop it to their foot and kick it back up again. The sport can be best described as a mixture of soccer and rugby. Games started to be played between counties in the early 18th century (Biege, 2007). The sport, in a completely different form, was played as far back as the 14th century and it was a very violent game. The game was played with many balls made of horsehide and involved hundreds of players and was over a great distance (Orjan 2006). The sport involved many stops for wrestling and fist fighting. The Irish some what of the same ideals as the romans that Trd Temertzoglou and Paul Challen quoted: â€Å"a sound minde in a sound body† (Exercise science, 2003, pg. 295,  ¶ 6) as they considered the game just as much an important social event as it was a sporting event and the would hold a large celebration after each match (Orjan, 2006). This sport was only well documented in County Kerry and was called Caid (Coughlan, 2001). In the modern sport of Gaelic Football, up until about 150 years ago, violence was a large part of the game (Couhlan, 2001). Even as the game became more and more structured and teams consisted of the same number of players and the game was played on a marked field with referees, violence was still widely accepted and fights were not interrupted. The sport has always had very strong social ties that surround the sport. Most teams even have a regular pub where all the players and many club supporters go after every game, whether they win or loose. Most clubs are more then just a sports team, most host many social events and act as a club for people from each County or city. The sport has the pureness of an amateur sports league but is watched and supported by the nearly the entire country and it is much like Australian rules football. Today, there is more then 2,500 clubs worldwide and an estimated 182,000 players. The sport in recent years has been able to thrive with a new emphasis on promoting the sport. However, in the early 14th century until 1527, there was a ban on all Gaelic games to reinforce the political power of the British. Again in the 1840’s it was a serious threat that the sport might be lost as the potato famine came and people did not have the energy to play the sport and many people were leaving the country. In recovery after the potato famine, the sport began to flourish. People in Ireland began to play the sport even more to show independence from England and now there were many Irish immigrants in North America and the sport began to spread. Gaelic Football as a sport has developed and changed greatly through out its history from a brutally violent game to an amazingly fast paced and skillful sport. The modern game is played on a pitch that is 130m – 145m in length and 80m – 90m wide for 70 minute at senior level football and is broken down into two 35-minute halves (History of Gaelic Football,  ¶ 7). The goal posts are 6.5m apart and a minimum of 7m tall with a crossbar at 2.5m and the goal is situated in the center of the goal line at either end of the field (History of Gaelic Football,  ¶ 7). Players are given numbers 1-15 and their number is in accordance with their position. There are 3 full backs, 3 half backs, 2 midfielders, 3 half forwards, 3 full forwards and a goalie on each team and the game is played man-on-man style so you start the game next to the player you are marking and stay with them throughout the game. There are two ways to score points in Gaelic Football. The first is to kick the ball past the goalie, which gets you 3 points, and the second way is to strike the ball either with your fist or your foot, and kick the ball over the crossbar and between the posts for 1 point. The type of ball used in Gaelic football is about the size of a soccer ball and slightly heavier. The ball can be carried in your hands for 4 steps and then you have to either get rid of the ball by striking it with your hand or kicking it or, to continue running with the ball, you can hop or solo the ball. A hop is bouncing the ball, and can only be used once in a row and the alternative is to solo the ball which is where you drop the ball to your foot and kick it back up to your self and this action can be repeated unlimited amounts of times in a row. There is a large physical presence as well in Gaelic Football. It has toned down the brutality of the sport since its original, but hard contact made shoulder to shoulder when challenging for the ball is still a legal part of the game (Orejan, 2006). The sport of Gaelic Football has changed so much in many ways, but in others, it has remained very much the same. The game has developed into a fantastic sport that requires a lot of coordination and skill. And at the same time, the culture and social aspects of the sport are so much the same. The lack of professional athletes in the sport really brings a different aspect to the sport.
